Neil Baker will again be leading the 1st team for his 3rd season as captain in 2008. After promotion back to the ECB Surrey Championship Premier League in 2007, and exciting season lies ahead.
The promotion was built upon a great team ethic and a bowling attack that performed week in, week out. We are very glad that we have managed to keep that side together, and have added Free State captain, Hancke von Rauenstein to bolster the middle order.
Everyone is aware that the Premier League is a step up, but it should not be too daunting for a side that have the talent and are prepared to put the work in to prosper at the higher level.
The Sunday Cup competitions also hold much promise in 2008. After last year’s run to the last 16 of the ESCT with a limited bowling attack, we are hoping to go better this year with a few more seam bowling options to work with. We enter the ECB Cockspur Cup for the first time this season, and will be dreaming of a Lord’s final in September.
A 2nd team led by Aqib Sindhu, will be aiming to join the 1’s and the 3’s in the Premier League in 2009. Aqib’s talent for nurturing young talent as he did successfully when 3’s captain should stand him in good stead for helping the 2’s players raise their games, to turn those winning draws into wins, and to fight their way to promotion.
Leading the 3rd team will be Ashish Patel, after young Dom Bunning’s brief reign in 2007. Ash has much experience in this role and will hope to put in a title challenge. The 3’s were the last Spencer side to win a Premier League back in 2004.
An exciting new dawn for 4th team Cricket, Tom Billingham takes his side into the Surrey Championship. With a mixture of youth and experience, the side should perform well up against the other big clubs of the Championship.
The successful Academy side will be captained by Abid Jafri and managed as ever by Noel Green, this side plays on Sunday’s in the Surrey Trust League.
New to 2008 is the Spencer Development side, which is to be run by Paul Watling, will offer even more young players a chance to experience Orange ball Sunday Cricket.
Lots of good Cricket going on, let’s hope for long hot summer days and look forward to seeing you at the SCG throughout the Summer.
Men's Sunday Cricket
Spencer offers a wide range of Cricket on a Sunday. From high level cup Cricket, down to a very traditional hitaround followed by a few lights ales!
Cup Cricket
We will be playing in two major cup competitions. The ECB Cockspur Cup, which is the national club knockout competition. Games start at 1pm, are 45 overs per side. The final is played at Lord's in September. We also play in the ESCT, which is a competition for clubs in London and the Home Counties. Games start at 1pm, and are 50 overs per side. The final is played at the Brit Oval. This is a competition Spencer have had some success in, in 1994 Spencer reached the final only to lose out to Eailing by 2 runs.
Development Cricket
Our Academy side plays in the Surrey Trust League, which is a 40 over, Orange ball competition, played in coloured clothing. Games start at 1.30pm. We also have a Development squad of slightly younger players playing in the Surrey Trust Development League.
Social Cricket
On most Sunday's we will put out two social sides (generally known as the B and C xl's.) They will play friendly games, generally of 40 overs, though sometimes they play 20 overs from 6.30pm.
